OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Backs 'Measured Pace' for Frontier AI Development
On September 13, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X that he supports the idea of a "measured pace" for frontier AI development, ensuring that the capabilities of the most advanced models do not grow faster than humans can maintain control.
Altman echoed recent remarks by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, saying that shifting more resources and research focus toward safety comes with costs, but is worthwhile to maintain confidence that U.S. companies are responsibly developing increasingly powerful AI. He wrote that competitive pressure should not be an excuse for recklessness, nor should capability growth outpace safety alignment and monitoring mechanisms. He also stressed that a "measured pace" does not mean a "halt in progress" — safety does not mean stopping technological advancement.
Altman reiterated OpenAI's support for a federal AI regulatory framework and emphasized the importance of U.S. government efforts to facilitate international coordination.
On September 14, AI-related stocks in Asia broadly fell. SoftBank Group, a major OpenAI investor, dropped 13% in Tokyo, while Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each fell more than 4% in Seoul.
