Former DeepMind Researcher Warns AI Could 'Kill Everyone'

By AI123

Bilal Chughtai, an AI researcher who recently resigned from Google DeepMind, warned on X and LinkedIn on Monday that time is running out to prevent AI from causing widespread harm, saying he truly believes AI could "kill us all." He said he witnessed AI development at Google and is deeply worried about its current trajectory.

Chughtai previously worked on AI safety and alignment at DeepMind. According to his LinkedIn profile, he now works at BlueDot Impact, a nonprofit providing AI safety training. He added that he remains optimistic that AI can be developed safely and that his next role will focus on that goal.

He is the latest in a series of researchers to issue stark warnings. Earlier this month, grassroots AI developer Jacob Coxon resigned and accused Anthropic and OpenAI of "betting our lives" in a race for superintelligent AI. Over the weekend, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a long essay urging the AI field to slow the development of advanced systems, a call that drew rare support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX AI CEO Elon Musk.
