TSMC Co-COO Compares AI to 'Three-Year-Old Superman,' Cites Limited Role in Next-Gen Chip R&D
TSMC co-chief operating officer Y.J. Mii compared artificial intelligence to a "three-year-old Superman" during a Q&A with students on Sept. 15, saying the technology is powerful but lacks judgment about the consequences of its actions.
Mii said TSMC is cautious about using AI to process sensitive R&D information, citing data-leak concerns. He added that the company does not currently see AI playing a major role in next-generation semiconductor R&D, as real-world constraints such as advanced equipment capabilities remain difficult for AI to address directly.
He also warned that improper use of AI tools could lead to the leakage or loss of sensitive information, noting that models from OpenAI and Anthropic have been involved in incidents targeting external data systems. The remarks come amid growing industry debate over AI safety, including calls to slow down AI development until safeguards are strengthened.
While AI is fueling data center expansion and demand for advanced chips, Mii's comments reflect a cautious view on applying AI to cutting-edge semiconductor work. His stance also illustrates the range of opinions within the industry about AI's practical value.
