OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT for Microsoft Word, Free Users Get Sidebar Document Help

By AI123

On September 19, OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT for Microsoft Word, making the AI assistant available to all ChatGPT plans, including free-tier users. After installing the plugin, users can access ChatGPT from a sidebar within Word and work with the document currently open.

The plugin reads the open document as context, enabling users to draft content, summarize documents, rewrite selected text, proofread copy, and adjust headings and formatting. The integration brings AI-assisted document workflows directly into Microsoft Word.

OpenAI also launched a limited-time promotion: ChatGPT Business and Enterprise customers can use the GPT-5.6 Sol model in Microsoft Word for free from September 17 to 30, with preview usage not counted against regular usage limits.
