US and China Set Up AI Incident Communication Channel, Plan November Dialogue

By AI123

China and the United States on Sept. 26 agreed to establish a channel for handling artificial intelligence-related incidents and to accelerate work on military crisis communications, following a three-day summit in Washington, the two governments said.

During the meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump, both sides also agreed to continue cooperating through a Board of Trade focused on selected bilateral issues. The White House said the board began operating in the last week of September 2026. China's Foreign Ministry said in a readout that the two sides would sign a memorandum of understanding on strengthening crisis communications between the two militaries.

Both sides will set up a communication mechanism for AI-related incidents to discuss related risks and benefits, with an AI-specific dialogue scheduled for November. Trump said the United States would not slow its AI efforts and that Washington would maintain its lead over China.

Analysts said the summit produced no major breakthroughs, but the establishment of working groups could help prevent disputes from escalating. The Chinese statement also said both sides would continue working on a pledge to reduce reciprocal tariffs on roughly $30 billion worth of goods.
