China's CXMT Plans Limited HBM3E Production Within Two Months

By AI123

ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China's largest DRAM maker, plans to begin limited production of HBM3E chips within the next two months, according to Reuters, citing unnamed sources. The company has already sent samples to several Chinese AI chip designers.

HBM3E is an advanced type of high-bandwidth memory used alongside AI processors. However, CXMT's yield is reportedly only around 20% to 30%, meaning most chips produced do not meet specifications. By comparison, SK Hynix, the global HBM market leader, has reported yields of about 70%. In terms of performance, CXMT's HBM3E chips are said to be closer to SK Hynix's older HBM3 products.

The move comes as China faces U.S. export restrictions on advanced memory chips and chipmaking equipment. CXMT did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
