End of Subscription Benefits? Anthropic Tightens Its Strongest AI Model, Claude Fable5, Will Be Charged by Usage
Anthropic recently announced that it will remove access to its most powerful AI model, Claude Fable5, from existing subscription services effective July 7, 2026. This decision means core features previously included in membership benefits will be phased out. For developers and power users accustomed to unlimited usage under monthly or annual subscriptions, future costs could increase significantly.
Export Restrictions Lifted and Global Redeployment Plans
Previously, the U.S. Department of Commerce lifted export restrictions on two high-end AI models, Fable and Mythos. Thanks to this policy relaxation, Anthropic had planned to offer Fable5 services globally across major platforms. However, due to unexpectedly high and unpredictable worldwide demand, the company had to urgently halt those plans. To maintain server ecosystem stability, they decided to switch to a usage-based billing model.
Developer Controversy and Official Statements
The new rules sparked significant controversy within the community, with many subscription users expressing dissatisfaction over what they viewed as a de facto price increase. In response, a core engineer from Anthropic publicly addressed concerns on a social platform, attempting to ease user anxiety. The official statement clarified that although the model will be temporarily removed from subscription plans such as Pro, Max, and Team after July 7, the company will try to reintroduce it into the existing subscription system as soon as server capacity allows.
