Anthropic CEO Urges Independent Audits of AI Safety
Anthropic CEO Amodei warned on September 14, 2026 that AI is advancing too quickly for researchers to ensure its safety. He proposed that independent auditors oversee safety work at AI labs and recommended that regulators allow AI labs to cooperate in coordinating safety standards.
The remarks drew support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, among others.
The industry comments also rippled through markets. On September 14, AI-related stocks fell broadly after industry leaders voiced safety concerns and called for a slower pace of AI development. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 5.9%, its biggest decline since July 1. Nvidia shares fell 3.4%, the semiconductor ETF lost 4.75%, and Intel and Micron both fell more than 5%.
Some software stocks rose during the session, as the prospect of slower AI development eased worries that software companies would be weighed down by heavy AI infrastructure spending.
