US expert calls for AI military applications to be part of US-China military dialogue

Feng Weide, distinguished research fellow at the Center for Naval Analyses, said on September 15, 2026, at the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum that artificial intelligence is an important dimension of US-China relations, with both room for cooperation and competition. He called for more communication between the two countries on AI and suggested that AI military applications, including the use of AI in military command and unmanned weapons control, should be part of US-China military dialogue.

Feng described AI discussions as a good example of how the two sides can move forward to build strategic stability. The remarks came during a Q&A session at the forum's high-level interview on building constructive and stable US-China relations.

The event follows the US-China summit in May 2026, where the two leaders agreed to launch intergovernmental AI dialogue, and the third US-China 1.5-track dialogue in August 2026, where AI and its security issues were among the hottest topics. Chinese former ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai and Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun also addressed AI governance, with Cui stressing the importance of shared principles and Guo calling for genuine multilateralism in AI development and governance.
