Meta launches WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server, enabling AI agents to manage business messaging

By AI123

Meta announced on September 15 that it now allows users to let AI agents of their choice—such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT—set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging through a new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server. The MCP (Model Context Protocol) server connects AI coding agents directly to the WhatsApp Business platform, simplifying what was previously a cumbersome setup process.

Previously, developers had to move between the Developer Console, Meta's Business Manager, the API reference, and their editor. Now they can chat with their preferred AI agent and describe what needs to be done. The AI agent can handle tasks such as creating the company's WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying phone numbers, registering for Cloud API access, and checking Terms of Service.

Businesses can also use the agent to create or edit messaging templates, test messages and webhooks, and monitor items that may have silently failed in the past, including Terms of Service, payment method, and Business Verification. During setup, Meta's Meta Social Technologies MCP server can be used to discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors.

The move extends Meta's lineup of MCP servers beyond those for managing ads and monitoring app configurations. Other tech companies, including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft, also offer MCP servers for AI agents to interact with their services securely.
