JPMorgan CEO Dimon backs 'light-touch' federal rules for AI

By AI123

On September 18, as debate intensifies over AI development in the U.S., JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon voiced support for light federal regulation of artificial intelligence. He said the industry cannot be completely unregulated, but inconsistent state-by-state rules would complicate AI commercialization and make business activity nearly impossible.

U.S. AI regulatory attitudes are currently divided. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously called for slowing frontier model development and implementing oversight, with several tech executives echoing calls to control the pace of R&D. Trump, however, dismissed those concerns, calling doomsday AI risks unfounded and describing warnings of deadly risks and calls for government intervention as a "ridiculous conspiracy theory." Dimon acknowledged concerns that government involvement could be mishandled, but said that does not mean regulation is unnecessary, and that the matter remains unresolved.

Separately, JPMorgan is part of the underwriting syndicate finalizing Anthropic's pre-IPO credit facility. Dimon said JPMorgan has been working with Anthropic to study frontier model risks and has been in communication with federal officials. The bank and the government are jointly building a new mechanism to address cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
