Shopify and Meta Partner to Bring Agentic Checkout to Muse

By AI123

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke announced on September 21, 2026, that Shopify has partnered with Meta to let users shop at Shopify merchants' online stores through Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, and complete checkout with Shop Pay. Lütke said the move aims to provide a simpler way for users to shop and check out via Muse.

Muse, powered by Meta's Muse Spark series models, was opened to external developers through a new connector platform last week. Within less than two weeks of launch, it topped the U.S. iOS free app chart, surpassing OpenAI's ChatGPT and other popular AI apps. Sensor Tower data shows Muse launched on September 8 and had accumulated more than 2.5 million downloads as of September 21. Meta has also allowed businesses to connect their services directly to Muse through connectors, such as travel services for flight bookings and calendar apps for schedule management.

Shop Pay stores buyers' shipping and billing information and supports one-click checkout. Deutsche Bank analysts said the partnership shows leading AI platforms are proactively integrating with Shopify's commerce infrastructure, helping ease concerns that AI agents and personal shopping assistants could disrupt Shopify's business model. In their view, the rise of AI agents highlights Shopify's strengths in structured product data, merchant connectivity, Shop Pay checkout, and order fulfillment infrastructure.

By contrast, Amazon has blocked Muse from accessing its shopping site, citing privacy and security risks. Amazon said Meta did not notify it before Muse visited its stores, and that the agent could bypass personalized shopping features, obtain and store customer credentials, and scrape account data.
