Cainiao Launches Supply Chain AI Decision Platform, Citing Over 60% Annual Growth
Cainiao officially launched its Supply Chain AI Decision Platform during the 2026 Apsara Conference in September 2026. The platform combines general large models with specialized small models and has already been deployed in industries including automotive, semiconductors, and retail. The company said the business is growing at an annual rate of over 60%.
Huang Zhong, general manager of Cainiao's Supply Chain AI Business Unit, said the timing is driven by two factors: strong demand from domestic customers looking to improve supply chain efficiency with AI, and the declining cost of AI implementation along with maturing methodologies, which he believes marks a turning point for supply chain simulation. He pointed to Palantir's success in prediction and simulation scenarios as evidence that similar capabilities can create value in supply chain management.
On the technical front, the platform adopts a "general large model plus specialized small model" architecture. The small models handle forecasting algorithms and operations research solving, while the large model aggregates information across the entire chain and performs optimal-solution reasoning. This approach aims to address the challenge of global optimization in long-chain supply scenarios, supported by natural language interaction for faster decision-making. Using an automotive example, Huang explained that the large model can factor in upstream supply plans, raw material disruptions caused by weather, and transportation delays to provide early warnings and assess the impact of localized changes.
In terms of results, the platform has improved inventory optimization gains by 5 to 6 percentage points in the automotive aftermarket, helped semiconductor manufacturers improve capacity and turnover, and supported retail clients in reducing inventory levels. The Mixue project, addressing supply-demand matching, has already been delivered and is expected to show effects within three to six months. Huang expects the business to maintain an annual growth rate of over 60% over the next two to three years.
Regarding competition, Huang said Cainiao's advantage lies in its full supply chain capabilities – from manufacturing and production-sales matching to demand forecasting and logistics networks – compared with peers focused mainly on logistics or traditional planning software. For overseas expansion, the unit is focusing on Southeast Asia and the Middle East due to geopolitical factors, and has already partnered with regional players such as Thailand's CP Group.
