Top Tech CEOs Meet Trump at White House to Discuss AI Safety
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Palantir CEO Alex Karp and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang visited the White House on Tuesday (Sept. 29) for a working lunch with President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, with AI safety among the key topics.
The White House also hosted a full-day event, launching a new portal aggregating federal information and resources, along with panel discussions on artificial intelligence, energy and space. Tom Brown, Anthropic's co-founder and chief compute officer, was also expected to attend.
The meeting comes as the U.S. tech industry remains divided over AI risk. Huang and Trump have both dismissed calls to slow AI development, while executives from several leading AI labs have urged more caution. Amodei dined with Trump on Sunday evening and has publicly advocated "pumping the brakes" on frontier AI research, a stance echoed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
Lawmakers have proposed various AI safety measures, including emergency kill switches for potentially uncontrolled systems, independent safety reviews of frontier models, and a proposal by Senator Bernie Sanders to halt "superintelligent AI" development. Still, near-term congressional action appears unlikely: the House is in recess until after the November 2026 midterms, and the Senate is expected to begin its pre-election recess later this week.
The lunch was widely seen as a key window for easing tensions between the tech community and the White House amid ongoing AI safety disputes.
