Analyst Dumps Airbnb Stake After Testing Meta's AI Agent Muse

By AI123

During a September 2026 episode of the financial podcast The Synopsis, host Drew spoke with independent stock analyst Mostly Borrowed Ideas (MBI), who has more than 150,000 followers. MBI said that about 10 days after Meta launched its AI agent Muse, he tested the app and subsequently decided to liquidate his Airbnb position and add to his Meta stake.

As a heavy Airbnb user who said he spent over $7,000 on the platform in 2026, MBI initially doubted that AI could disrupt online travel agencies. But Muse changed his view. He asked Muse to recommend five stays within a two-hour drive based on his past Airbnb experiences. Muse automatically reviewed his history and analyzed travel Reels he had saved on Instagram, then presented options with photos and reasoning. When MBI asked whether he could book a farmhouse directly, Muse said it could bypass Airbnb and save about 60%, with payment already set up for one-click confirmation.

MBI and Drew discussed how such agents could reshape Airbnb, Booking, Uber, DoorDash and Amazon. MBI argued that AI agents can build trust assessments from public reviews, while a host could use AI to list a property across multiple platforms, undermining exclusive supply moats. He predicted Airbnb's direct traffic could decline significantly over the next five to ten years.

They also noted Booking's reliance on paid Google traffic, Amazon's $76 billion advertising business facing agents that do not click ads, and delayed but eventual pressure on food delivery and ride-hailing. Both agreed that even in the best case, such platforms would struggle to maintain their current position, and their long-term compound earnings growth could be compressed by AI.

They described the emerging pattern as "proactive commerce", in which AI agents continuously seek better options for users and proactively suggest replacements, threatening platforms that rely on information asymmetry and traffic tolls.
