OpenAI to show display ads next to ChatGPT-generated images

By AI123

OpenAI is adding visual display ads to its ad product lineup, with the ads set to appear alongside images generated by ChatGPT. The new ads will roll out in the U.S. later this month for an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI said the ads will be clearly labeled and will not influence ChatGPT's responses.

The company introduced ads earlier this year to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers, and expanded them to India in August. OpenAI is now courting online advertisers who want to use visual imagery to reach potential customers. Once the ads roll out globally, they could target ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users.

Alongside the display ads, OpenAI is expanding its measurement tools and partner ecosystem, adding click attribution solutions including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin, as well as full-funnel measurement partners Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL. The company is also working with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic to help advertisers explore geo-based experiments.

OpenAI said it is developing brand suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to help advertisers better understand the ChatGPT ads environment. The moves signal OpenAI's push to make ChatGPT a viable ad-supported business for users on free and low-cost plans.
