Four-Person Team Builds Free Open-Source Adobe Alternative ArtCraft with AI-Generated Code
ArtCraft, a free and open-source alternative to Adobe's creative suite, is being developed by a four-person team in Atlanta, Georgia, using AI-generated code. The team aims to recreate Adobe's software through reverse engineering, keeping similar features while removing the need for cloud connectivity and subscription fees.
The suite includes PhotoCraft, an open-source image editor positioned against Photoshop, and LightCraft, a Lightroom alternative that emphasizes no account registration, no cloud services, no telemetry data collection, and no subscription. All applications are still in development, with some in early alpha testing.
Adobe's Creative Cloud has long been criticized for its high subscription costs and the loss of true offline usability under the subscription model. ArtCraft is seen as an attempt to challenge that ecosystem by offering a free, open-source alternative built primarily with AI-generated code.
The approach has drawn mixed reactions online. Some Reddit users are impressed by the rapid prototyping enabled by AI, but caution that a fast prototype does not guarantee a mature, stable final product. Others say they do not care how the software was built and just want to move away from Adobe, with some early testers describing the experience as "amazing" and expressing relief at finally leaving Adobe behind.
