ITU-T Embodied Intelligence Standards Meeting to Be Held in China for First Time Alongside Global Challenge

By AI123

On October 12, the Hangzhou High-tech Zone (Binjiang) held a media briefing to announce two major embodied intelligence events to be held concurrently in the district. The third 2026 meeting of the ITU-T Focus Group on Embodied Intelligence Standards will take place from October 13 to 16, while the first Global Embodied Intelligence Application Innovation Challenge and the 2026 China Robot Competition finals are scheduled for October 16 to 18.

This will be the first time the focus group—the world's first international standards platform for embodied intelligence—holds a plenary meeting outside Geneva, in China. The meeting is expected to approve two key technical specifications, with discussions covering multimodal data, interface interoperability, and industrial applications. Nearly 400 experts from 43 countries are expected to attend. International participants will also visit local enterprises and the competition venue, aiming to promote mutual learning between international standards and Chinese industrial practice.

The inaugural Global Embodied Intelligence Application Innovation Challenge adopts a "two competitions in one" format, featuring 22 tracks, 60 contest items, and 3 enterprise-specific contests. The preliminary rounds attracted about 28,000 participants from 380 universities, enterprises, and public institutions across China. The finals will bring together 2,000 teams and nearly 5,000 competitors, competing in real-world scenarios including underwater, ground, air, and space settings. The event also includes talent recruitment and investment exchange sessions, supporting the development of Hangzhou's "296X" advanced manufacturing cluster.

Li Xingteng, deputy general manager of Hangzhou Embodied Intelligence Application Pilot Base Co., Ltd., explained that embodied intelligence requires robots to rely on their own perception, movement, and manipulation capabilities to understand tasks, identify changes, make decisions, and continuously perform actions in real environments, forming a complete loop of perception, understanding, decision-making, execution, and feedback. The two events are expected to strengthen the linkage among standard development, competition, and industrial practice.
