Microsoft Launches Xbox Labs to Explore AI-Assisted Game Modding and Recompilation

By AI123

Microsoft has created Xbox Labs, a new team focused on exploring how AI-assisted game modding and recompilation and other emerging technologies could shape game development. In an internal memo to employees on October 13, 2026, the Xbox CEO said the recent wave of AI-generated game content is changing traditional perceptions of the boundaries of game development.

The memo cited examples of modders using Claude Opus 5.5 to blend content from different games, such as having Mario perform platforming in Elden Ring or porting Call of Duty into a web browser. Windows PC games have also been converted to run on Apple silicon and ported to browsers using WebAssembly and WebGPU, which now has nearly 90% support across global browsers.

The CEO noted that these efforts challenge long-standing assumptions in the industry, including the ties between software and hardware, the line between creation and play, and the ways players discover and experience games. To explore these possibilities, Xbox's CTO will lead a small team of developers, engineers, and scientists to turn new technologies and ideas into experiences that players and developers can actually use. The team will work openly and measure progress by whether more people join in playing and creating.

The Xbox chief also stressed that the company's priorities remain unchanged, including the 4Cs strategy, building great games, advancing the hardware business, and managing intellectual property and player communities. She also noted that people spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games, roughly five times the estimated total hours of programming worldwide.
