US Pushes "Super Intelligence" Term at IMF-World Bank Meetings
At the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bangkok, U.S. Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs Erin Browne said "Super Intelligence" (SI) is a more accurate term than "artificial intelligence" for the emerging technology. The U.S. directed federal agencies to adopt the term in September 2026 and treats promoting it as a priority.
As the current president of the Group of 20, Washington is seeking to include "Super Intelligence" in the consensus statement of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) to encourage broader international uptake. Reuters noted that the debate over terminology involves governance of AI, international standard-setting and geopolitical influence; if consensus cannot be reached, the IMFC chair, Saudi Arabia's finance minister, could issue a chairman's statement, while a possible compromise would avoid both "SI" and "AI" and use a neutral phrase such as "new technologies."
