Amazon rebrands Kindle Unlimited as Kindle+, adds AI-narrated audiobooks

By AI123

Amazon has renamed its Kindle Unlimited subscription to Kindle+. The service continues to offer unlimited reading from the eligible Kindle catalog for $12 per month, and remains separate from Prime. Subscribers can still borrow up to 20 titles at once.

The main change is an expanded audiobook category that now includes AI-narrated titles. Amazon is also making its Virtual Voice service available free to authors in the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) program, allowing them to generate AI-narrated versions of their books without cost. Authors enrolled in Kindle+ earn based on the number of pages read, not per download.

The price of the subscription remains unchanged, and the core reading experience is largely the same. The rebrand is not a new subscription but an update that adds listening options. Readers who prefer human-narrated or dramatized audiobooks can still use Audible or other platforms such as Libby.

Listening to books has been available on Kindle devices and the Kindle app for years. Some Kindle Unlimited ebooks previously included free access to professionally narrated audiobooks, and accessibility features like Assistive Reader and VoiceView offered text-to-speech. The addition of AI-narrated titles expands the listening options available through the subscription.
