Springer Nature Partners with Google DeepMind to Develop AI Peer-Review Assistant

By AI123

Springer Nature announced on October 28 that it has entered into a research collaboration with Google DeepMind to jointly design an AI-powered peer-review assistant. The tool is intended to help reviewers assess manuscripts more efficiently and flag areas that may require closer attention, allowing them to focus on questions that demand scientific judgment.

The collaboration combines Springer Nature's expertise in managing peer review with Google DeepMind's Gemini models and Google's experience in building agentic research tools. The assistant is designed to help reviewers analyze large volumes of text, figures and images. The prototype, currently being tested, aims to make peer review an interactive experience that augments scientific experts with AI while keeping human judgment at the core of the process.

The system is built on Google's open-source agent development kit and runs only on Springer Nature's private, secure Gemini Enterprise platform. All content used to develop and test the tool remains within this secure environment, ensuring confidentiality for authors and reviewers.

Saskia Steinacker, Springer Nature's Chief Product Officer, said the expertise and judgment of reviewers are fundamental to peer review, and the growing volume and complexity of research output create opportunities to explore how AI can responsibly support that expertise. Seshu Ajjarapu, Senior Director of Applied AI at Google DeepMind, said the partnership aims to build a platform that eases pressure from rising submission volumes while upholding the editorial standards of leading journals.
