PSI Uses AI Research System to Tackle Five Open Quantum Information Problems
On October 28, Physical Superintelligence (PSI) announced that it had made progress on five open problems in quantum information theory using its self-developed AI research system. The related papers, Lean formal proofs, and verification code have been made public on GitHub.
The five problems are drawn from the Open Quantum Problems (OQP) catalogue, established in 1999 by German physicist Reinhard Werner. They span entanglement purification, quantum field theory, high-dimensional quantum communication, quantum channel capacity, and quantum causality. Three of the problems—OQP 2, OQP 12, and OQP 27—were added in the early 2000s.
PSI, founded on September 1, 2026, said this was its first public result. The company aims to scale scientific discovery from individual genius to industrial production. Its AI research system, Emmy, separates generation from verification: it uses frontier large models to break down open problems into verifiable mathematical sub-hypotheses, then checks them through the Lean formal proof assistant, symbolic computation engines, and verification code. A passing Lean compilation means the conclusion is confirmed in mathematical logic.
According to public information, PSI announced a $58 million seed round in September 2026, led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, with individual investors from OpenAI, Nvidia, and other tech companies.
