EV maker Rivian has acquired Third Dimension, a UK AI startup that turns images and videos into lifelike 3D worlds, to accelerate development of its autonomous driving systems and support the robotaxis it plans to supply to Uber. Terms were not disclosed.
At TechCrunch Disrupt in October 2026, Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said the company will eventually run AI agents from third-party developers like Anthropic in its cars, without giving a timeline and pointing to its December AI & Autonomy Day. He described Rivian's in-house in-car agent framework, which routes tasks between local edge models and cloud models based on complexity, and said the next step is to integrate products from frontier AI companies.
