Overview

FaceSymAI is a free, web-based artificial intelligence tool that measures facial symmetry from uploaded photographs. Available at face-symmetry-test.com, the application uses computer vision to detect and crop the dominant face in an image, then maps 68 facial landmark points across the jaw, eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth. It calculates a symmetry score for seven feature pairs by comparing the horizontal distance from each landmark to a vertical midline against its counterpart on the opposite side. The final overall score is the average of these seven individual scores. No account, fee, or usage limit is imposed; the service is supported by on-site advertising, making it accessible to any user with a web browser.

The core algorithm is deterministic and purely geometric. Once the face detector isolates the largest face, the landmark model places 68 points along the major facial contours. A vertical reference line is drawn through the face, and for each of the seven feature pairs—covering areas such as the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, and jaw—the left and right distances to the midline are compared. A smaller difference yields a higher score for that pair. The measurement is exact in the sense that identical landmarks always produce identical arithmetic results. However, the accuracy of the output depends on the quality of the input photograph. Head tilt, asymmetric smiles, and directional lighting can shift landmark positions and cause score variations. Therefore, the result should be interpreted as a property of the photo, not an immutable attribute of the person. The analysis reads only geometric data; it does not assess skin texture, hair, age, or identity, and it performs no facial recognition.

Privacy is a central design principle. Uploaded photos are processed in memory only to generate the symmetry result and are passed briefly to the results page for display. The image is never written to a database, saved to disk, or used to train machine learning models. After the session ends, the photo is effectively destroyed. This no-retention policy makes FaceSymAI suitable for users who are wary of cloud services that store biometric data. To obtain the most reliable reading, the tool recommends facing the camera directly, keeping the head level, using flat and even lighting, and removing hair, glasses, or hats. A neutral expression is also advised, since natural smiles are rarely symmetric and can disproportionately influence the landmarks.

FaceSymAI is versatile enough for personal exploration, educational demonstrations, and practical assessment. Individuals can satisfy their curiosity about facial proportions, photographers can study how pose and lighting affect perceived symmetry, and educators can use the tool to illustrate landmark detection and geometric analysis in computer vision courses. Group photos are supported, though only the largest face is measured, which is usually the closest subject. Running the same face through multiple photos is recommended, as it reveals how much of the score comes from facial structure versus the shooting conditions. With its unlimited free access, strict privacy safeguards, and focused feature set, FaceSymAI delivers a lightweight yet technically sound approach to AI-powered facial symmetry analysis.
