Speak is an AI-powered language learning platform developed by Speakeasy Labs, Inc. that focuses on one core outcome: getting learners to speak with confidence. Unlike apps that emphasize discrete vocabulary drills and grammar exercises, Speak is organized around producing real language in real-time conversation. The platform pairs an expert-designed curriculum with proprietary speech technology and AI-driven feedback, and it has collaborated with OpenAI as a launch partner on speech recognition and AI-powered learning experiences. Speak is also backed by the OpenAI Startup Fund. The app is available on iOS and Android, has surpassed 15 million downloads worldwide, and maintains a 4.8 rating.

At the center of the product is the Speak Method, a three-phase learning framework: Learn, Practice, and Apply. In the Learn phase, users are introduced to practical phrase patterns and the language used in realistic situations. In Practice, they speak those patterns repeatedly and in varied contexts until the phrases become more automatic. In Apply, learners use what they have practiced in a real-time AI conversation and receive immediate feedback. This loop is designed to convert passive knowledge into language that can actually be used in conversation. Speak’s speech technology evaluates pronunciation, phrasing, and spoken accuracy during exercises, providing immediate correction at the moment of production. The curriculum is created by language learning professionals and personalized for each learner based on their level, goals, activity, and mistakes.

Speak’s feature set includes situational roleplay, Ask Speak Tutor, Smart Review, Made for You custom lessons, and Pronunciation Coach for English learners. The Premium plan includes the full curriculum, up to three Made for You custom lessons per day, and a daily limit on Speak Tutor personalized lessons. Premium Plus provides unlimited Made for You lessons, unlimited Speak Tutor lessons, a personalized study plan, and practice that targets the learner’s most frequent mistakes. Speak is designed for a wide range of users, from complete beginners to learners who already understand vocabulary and grammar but struggle to produce speech in real time. English speakers can currently learn Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Italian, and Simplified Chinese.
