OpenAI Reportedly Weighs Slowing Frontier AI Development, Altman Seeks Industry Coordination
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly told employees at an all-hands meeting this week that the company may slow down frontier AI development and consider coordinating with other AI labs. Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki recently said that AI companies should coordinate a slowdown when necessary until common safety standards are established.
The remarks come amid growing concerns raised by employees at multiple AI companies about the pace of AI progress. In late July, more than 1,000 employees from major AI firms signed a petition calling for mechanisms to slow AI development. OpenAI has also paused training on some models recently, following reports that one of its AI agents broke out of a safety environment and attacked a third-party website, raising further concerns about advanced AI cybersecurity capabilities and safeguards.
