OpenAI President: AI Slowdown Should Target Frontier Labs, Not Open Source
On September 14, 2026, OpenAI President and co-founder Greg Brockman said during a podcast that any global slowdown in artificial intelligence development should primarily apply to frontier AI companies building the most advanced models, rather than open-source models or individual hobbyist projects. He described the notion of "slowing down" as targeting large supercomputer initiatives requiring hundreds of billions of dollars in capital.
Brockman also said that OpenAI has reduced the frequency of model training and significantly adjusted its internal security procedures following a recent cyberattack on Hugging Face. He called for global coordination and international treaties to govern the long-term development of AI, noting that AI's future impact could extend beyond the reach of individuals, companies, and even individual nations.
