IFPI Launches Streaming Integrity Initiative to Combat Music Streaming Fraud
On September 14, 2026, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) launched the Streaming Integrity Initiative (SII), described as a new industry commitment to combat streaming fraud and protect artists, songwriters and fans from its harm. IFPI represents more than 8,000 record companies worldwide.
According to IFPI, streaming fraud involves manipulating digital music services to generate revenue from plays that are not genuine, often at scale, undermining trust in streaming services and siphoning revenues from artists, songwriters, record labels and music publishers who power the music economy.
The initiative sets out five commitments for participating distributors: verify rights ownership and customer identities through robust rights verification and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes; vet content using effective tools to identify infringement, fraudulent activity and AI-related risks; take action by detecting, investigating and mitigating suspected fraud, including against repeat offenders; share intelligence where legally permissible to help prevent bad actors from moving across platforms; and measure and continuously strengthen anti-fraud systems to address evolving threats.
Initial supporting distributors include Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group and Merlin. IFPI is encouraging more companies to join the initiative.
