SoftBank Plans $25.9B Repayment on OpenAI Credit Line, Adds $11.87B Facility
SoftBank Group said on Sept. 14 that it plans to repay $25.9 billion of the $40 billion credit facility it obtained to support its investment in OpenAI, with repayment due by Sept. 15. According to Bloomberg, the Japanese conglomerate has also arranged a new two-year credit facility of $11.87 billion, securing commitments from about 20 financial institutions and exceeding its initial $10 billion target.
SoftBank has invested roughly $65 billion in OpenAI, and the repayment is part of its broader financing strategy for AI ventures. The company is also exploring additional funding options, including issuing up to $20 billion in dollar bonds, raising $10 billion secured by its OpenAI stake, and issuing ¥1 trillion (about $6.5 billion) in retail bonds. SoftBank has previously secured about $37 billion to support AI commitments, covering OpenAI and planned acquisitions such as ABB Robotics and DigitalBridge.
On Sept. 14, SoftBank shares fell 10.72% in Tokyo to ¥5,795, the worst performer on the Nikkei 225, after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company has no IPO plans for 2026. Daiwa Securities' chief strategist said investors are concerned that OpenAI's value may not be as high as previously expected. SoftBank's stock has dropped about 30% from its June high but remains up nearly 26% so far in 2026.
