Hedge Fund Founder Uses AI to Replace Research Team, Cutting Annual Spending to Below $40,000

By AI123

Bracket22 founder Brian Kelly said in a CNBC interview on September 15, 2026 that his AI-run hedge fund operates with a team of agents instead of human research staff. The agents handle quantitative research, technical analysis, and red-team challenges, while Kelly alone makes final investment decisions.

Kelly previously ran a crypto hedge fund that cost roughly $5 million a year. He closed it in early 2025 and built Bracket22 by breaking down the fund into roles and assigning an agent to each one. He said Bracket22 now spends about $30,000 to $40,000 annually on all agents and computing power, a cost reduction of more than 99%. He estimated his productivity has increased at least tenfold.

The fund trades Kelly's own capital across cryptocurrencies, equities, and commodities. It uses named agents such as Desmond for quantitative strategies, Steffi for technical analysis, Doocy to attack investment logic, and Houston to coordinate and report. Kelly also built a "corporate brain" system that links research, historical trades, and emails into interconnected nodes for agents to use over time. Agents do not need shift handoffs and can work around the clock, he said.

Kelly did not disclose the fund's returns, drawdown, or other key performance metrics. The efficiency gains are clear, but whether the agent-driven approach can outperform the previous human team remains an open question.
