Bill Gates Warns of 20-Year AI Job Disruption; Foundation Pledges $1B

By AI123

Bill Gates, in an interview with The Paper on Sept. 15, warned that while AI and robotics could eventually create a society wealthy enough to allow shorter working weeks or earlier retirement, the world may first face a turbulent transition of about 20 years. He urged leaders to start preparing now, saying they may underestimate the challenge.

The warning came as the Gates Foundation released its ninth annual Goalkeepers report, which examines AI and equity. The report says AI will not automatically create fairness or inequality; its impact will depend on choices made today around language, data, infrastructure, talent, product design and regulation. The foundation pledged $1 billion over two years to support equitable AI applications in health, education and agriculture.

Gates also said China places great importance on employment and could be among the first countries to seriously address AI's impact on jobs, especially as humanoid robots develop rapidly. He mentioned watching China's World Humanoid Robot Games, describing the event as remarkable and noting China's strong public and industrial interest in humanoid robotics.

He stressed that work means more than a paycheck, as it also provides social connection, self-worth and a way of structuring daily life. Economic compensation alone will not be enough to handle job displacement; societies must consider how to support affected workers beyond financial aid, a challenge he said remains unsolved globally.
