Huawei executive Guo Ping says AI is company's biggest opportunity, aims to become Nvidia in computing

Huawei Supervisory Board Chairman Guo Ping told new employees that artificial intelligence represents the company's biggest opportunity, and that Huawei aims to become Nvidia in the ICT and computing sectors. The remarks were published by Huawei's Xinsheng Community on Sept 15.

Guo said Huawei will focus on its core connectivity and computing businesses and has no plans to expand into other areas, including manufacturing satellites or spacecraft. He said the company sees AI as a major opportunity, citing DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng's view that rapid technological iteration in the AI era could weaken the moat of Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem.

On large language models, Guo said Huawei's strategy varies by business: in ICT and computing, Huawei's goal is to become Nvidia, with its core advantage lying in supporting customers to build their own models and ensuring that global models can run efficiently on Huawei's Ascend, Kunpeng, supernodes and clusters. For terminals and intelligent driving, he said in-house models are preferred, while Huawei Cloud must have its own models to stay competitive. Guo acknowledged that Huawei started early in large models but did not take the lead, while companies such as Anthropic, Moonshot AI and DeepSeek made breakthroughs.

He also responded to questions about 6G, supply chain and Apple. Guo said Huawei hopes to contribute to global unified standards, and denied any plan to build satellites or spacecraft. On supply chain, he said Huawei needs to learn from Apple's competitiveness, resilience and flexibility. Regarding whether Huawei phone sales could surpass Apple, Guo said Huawei does not set surpassing a particular company as its goal.
