Google Home to support MCP, enabling AI agents to control smart devices

By AI123

Google has announced that Google Home will support the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard, allowing AI agents such as Google Antigravity, Claude, Hermes and Open Claw to securely access and control smart home devices and event history within the Google Home ecosystem. The feature will first be offered as an early access build to Premium Advanced subscribers.

MCP is a protocol that enables agentic chatbots to connect with external APIs. With this integration, Google said the agents can “securely work with all of the devices and event history in your Google Home ecosystem.” Users could use natural language to monitor activity, review camera summaries across rooms, control connected devices and build custom smart home dashboards, which may appeal to those with extensive connected home setups.

The early access build is expected in the “coming weeks” and will be limited to Google Home Premium Advanced users, priced at $20 per month or $200 per year.

Anthropic introduced MCP in 2024, and the standard has gained traction over the past year, with Google, OpenAI, Microsoft and SpaceXAI supporting it in some form. However, experts have warned about security flaws, including a lack of enforced authentication, which has already contributed to data breaches as adoption grows.
