Altimeter CEO Says AI Trade Needs $200B Annual Revenue by Year-End

By AI123

Brad Gerstner, founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital, said at the All-In Podcast annual summit on Sept. 17 that while the current market rally is driven by earnings rather than valuation bubbles, the conditions supporting the "AI trade" are narrowing.

He cited data showing that Anthropic, OpenAI and SpaceX together generate roughly $100 billion in annualized revenue. By the end of 2026, that figure must grow to at least $180 billion to $200 billion to justify current valuations, he said. If cloud giants' capex expansion is not met by sufficient rental demand, the aggressive investment cycle will be difficult to sustain.

Gerstner said he is maintaining a "medium" position and avoiding high leverage. If frontier labs' monthly revenue stays near $8 billion and falling oil prices keep long-end rates in check, he would consider adding; otherwise he reserves the right to reduce positions. "Everyone knows AI now, expectations are already priced in," he warned. "We have to follow the facts and stay flexible."

He also noted that the rally is driven by earnings growth, not multiple expansion, and that semiconductors account for about 70% of the Nasdaq's gains. He called frontier labs' monthly revenue "the most important data point in the market today." Even $200 billion in annualized AI revenue by year-end would fall short of what is needed over time, he argued, as matching cloud capex expansion would require that figure to rise toward $450 billion, $800 billion and eventually close to $1 trillion.

He also flagged interest rates as a key risk, saying a 10-year Treasury yield of 5.5% would pressure valuations, and warned against using four-times leveraged strategies in the current volatile environment.
