Huawei advances Ascend 960DT AI chip launch to Q1 2027

By AI123

Huawei announced at its Huawei Connect conference on September 17, 2026, that its next-generation Ascend 960DT AI chip will be launched in the first quarter of 2027, earlier than the previously planned third quarter of 2027. Eric Xu, Huawei's rotating chairman, said the Ascend 960 chip family is launching ahead of schedule with doubled performance.

The move is seen as part of Huawei's efforts to strengthen its AI computing capabilities and compete with Nvidia. Huawei has continued advancing its chip ambitions despite U.S. restrictions on China's access to advanced semiconductor technology.

Huawei also detailed its Peerium Computing Architecture, which uses UnifiedBus technology to link processors with memory, storage, and networking hardware, enabling large-scale AI computing systems for both training and inference. The first systems based on this architecture include the Atlas 950 SuperPoD and SuperCluster, with the latter capable of connecting up to 256,000 accelerator cards.

Some analysts noted that Huawei previously planned the Atlas 960 SuperPoD to scale to 15,488 Ascend 960 chips, while this week's announcement described a system with 4,096 chips, suggesting the chip is arriving earlier but the initially disclosed system scale is smaller. However, observers believe such restrictions are unlikely to halt China's push for semiconductor self-sufficiency.
