MicroPixel: Open-Source AI-Native Embedded OS Targets Low-Cost Chips

By AI123

On September 19, Huang Guan, chairman of Shenzhen Shifang Ronghai Technology Co., Ltd., introduced the open-source project MicroPixel at the 4th Open Source Hardware Spark Conference and Global AI Hardware Innovation Ecosystem Conference in Shenzhen. He described it as the industry's first AI-native embedded application operating system for low-cost chips.

MicroPixel provides three layers of capability: a system layer that encapsulates display, touch, audio, storage, and app management into base system services; a creation layer that lets developers describe app ideas in natural language and use AI to generate and deploy apps to real devices; and an experience layer with application-level sandbox isolation, so a faulty app can close itself without affecting the entire device. The project is designed to let low-cost chips install, switch, and update applications like smartphones, moving beyond the traditional one-time programming model of embedded devices.

According to public data cited in the report, China's low-cost chip market is expected to exceed 50 billion yuan in 2026. The team behind MicroPixel previously developed the open-source xiaozhi-esp32 project, which has received more than 29,000 stars and been connected to more than two million devices. Huang said MicroPixel defines a new product category rather than a simple developer tool, turning low-cost chips into intelligent terminals that can host user-made applications.
