DeepSeek and Chinese AI Firms Invited to Brief UN Security Council on Risks
Reuters reported on September 22, citing two sources, that Chinese AI startup DeepSeek and other Chinese AI companies including Moonshot have been invited to brief the UN Security Council on AI risks this week. The Security Council is scheduled to meet on September 23 to discuss AI and international security.
One source said DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng does not plan to attend, though plans could still change at the last minute. Neither DeepSeek nor Moonshot immediately responded to requests for comment.
The briefing follows warnings from AI industry figures about the risks of rapidly advancing AI systems, including the possibility that they could soon improve themselves and escape human control. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also warned of significant risks from AI's rapid development. The Security Council first addressed AI risks in 2023.
The report also highlights a growing debate in the US over AI risks. Anthropic's CEO called for slowing advanced AI development, gaining support from Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. President Donald Trump dismissed such calls as a "scam" and stressed the importance of maintaining US leadership over China in AI. China's foreign ministry has said AI should be developed in an open, inclusive and beneficial way for all.
