Sony's PS5 Update Makes Enhanced PSSR the Default Upscaler on PS5 Pro
Sony has rolled out PlayStation 5 system software 26.06-14.00.00, which enables Enhance PSSR Image Quality by default. Games built on the original version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution will now automatically use Sony's newer upscaler on PS5 Pro, without players needing to manually toggle the setting. Games that do not support PSSR are unaffected, and the update does not add AI upscaling to unsupported titles.
The enhanced PSSR launched in March 2026. Sony refers to it as an upgraded or enhanced version rather than PSSR 2.0, and it uses a different neural network and overall algorithm compared with the original. Previously, PS5 Pro owners had to enable the system-level override themselves to apply the enhanced model to games built around the original PSSR technology.
PSSR is Sony's machine-learning upscaler for the PS5 Pro, allowing games to render at a lower resolution and then upscale to a higher output resolution. The initial version produced shimmering textures and distortion around fine text in some titles. According to Sony, the enhanced version offers improvements in fine detail clarity, image reconstruction and motion stability. Developers have reported less flickering and afterimages, along with more refined details such as hair and foliage. The technology stems from Project Amethyst, Sony's graphics research collaboration with AMD.
Games that support the newer version will use it by default. If unexpected visual effects occur, users can disable the override under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality to keep original PSSR games on their original tech. Playing in Pro or Quality mode is required to benefit from the improvements.
