Apple Shelves Camera-Equipped AI Pendant Project, Reports Say
On Sept. 22, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple had been developing an AI-powered wearable device with a built-in camera, resembling a pendant that could be worn around the neck, clipped to clothing, or attached elsewhere on the body. The project has now been shelved, and Apple has not announced any future release plans.
Under Apple's original concept, the device was envisioned as an "always-on" visual perception terminal, meant to bring AI closer to users' daily environments and offer recognition, logging, and assistance without requiring hands-free operation. The camera would collect visual information from the user's surroundings and send the data to Apple's next-generation Siri assistant. Earlier reports also suggested the device might include a microphone for voice commands.
Gurman said Apple has paused the project, but the specific reasons for the delay are unclear, and it is uncertain whether development will resume. If the AI pendant is eventually revived, continuous collection of visual and audio data could raise notable privacy and security concerns, including unintentionally recording bystanders, capturing sensitive scenes, and questions around how user data is stored and processed.
