Anthropic CEO Urges UN Security Council to Establish Global AI Safety Standards

Dario Amodei, chief executive of Anthropic, addressed the United Nations Security Council via video link on September 24, 2026, warning that artificial intelligence could pose risks to humanity if mismanaged and calling for international safeguards to prevent the technology from becoming too powerful to control.

Amodei reiterated points he made in a September 12 essay, proposing international agreements to ban the use of AI in developing biological weapons and to establish global standards for testing new AI models. He also stressed that the international community should ensure the power of AI is not monopolized by any single company or country.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, speaking at the same session, said humanity could hand over control of the future to AI and advocated a "middle path" in safety debates, keeping AI systems under human control, ensuring AI benefits people, and empowering individuals through the technology.

Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue also spoke at the UN, calling for greater transparency from private companies developing cutting-edge AI models and advocating the widespread distribution of open-source AI systems. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband responded that tech leaders were "telling us, in no uncertain terms, that we cannot simply rely on them to prevent disaster from befalling the world."

The remarks came as both companies face tighter scrutiny over product safety. Earlier this month, Anthropic researchers warned that the technology could destroy humanity within a decade, intensifying public concern over AI risks.
