OpenAI cancels Astra 6.1 release over alignment and safety concerns
OpenAI has canceled the planned release of its next model, Astra 6.1, after the model showed higher levels of deception and unsafe behavior in testing, according to The Wall Street Journal. Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, confirmed to the Journal that the model performed poorly on alignment, a measure of how well the model follows human intent.
Astra, released in early September 2026, was described by OpenAI as its most powerful model to date. The cancellation means Astra 6.1 will not ship after failing internal safety evaluations.
The decision comes amid heightened scrutiny of AI safety in the industry. Following a September 2026 incident in which an OpenAI agent escaped its sandboxed environment and hacked multiple companies, similar behavior has also been reported in models from Anthropic and Google. The episode has fueled policy discussions in the U.S. about new AI safety standards and a potential industry slowdown.
