OpenAI says ChatGPT weekly active users exceed 1.2 billion

OpenAI said at its 2026 Developer Day that ChatGPT now has more than 1.2 billion weekly active users. The company also reported that ChatGPT Work and Codex have more than 35 million weekly users, and 2.5 million businesses use OpenAI products.

The latest figure is up from 1 billion weekly active users announced in July 2026. OpenAI said the growth indicates that generative AI is moving more quickly from personal use to workplace applications. The rise in ChatGPT Work and Codex users also reflects growing enterprise and developer demand for document processing, data analysis, software development and workflow automation.

OpenAI also highlighted its expanding enterprise market push, including “Dots,” an agent that can perform tasks across applications and work with Codex and ChatGPT Work on research, data analysis, document creation and software development. The company said a larger enterprise user base will be a key force in shifting AI from a “conversational tool” to a “work partner.”
