Sony brings AI upscaling to base PS5 via QSSR

Sony Interactive Entertainment has brought AI upscaling to the standard PS5. On October 2, 2026, the company began deploying patches for Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, making them the first games to support Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) through new graphics options.

SIE said the technology delivers "notable improvements" to image detail and stability, and that every PlayStation developer will be able to add QSSR to their games. QSSR comes from a project Sony worked on with AMD, and the company says it was able to bring AI upscaling to the base PS5 thanks to "a streamlined neural network architecture" and "a hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance."

Since the PS5 Pro launched in 2024, Sony has offered PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on that console and has continued to iterate. In a blog post, Sony said players and developers asked whether a similar option could come to the less-powerful PS5.

The feature arrives on the same day Sucker Punch Productions released a complete edition of Ghost of Yōtei, which includes a story expansion and a roguelike mode similar to The Last of Us Part 2's No Return. Existing owners can upgrade for $15.

Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology at Insomniac Games, said the tech "adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku and many other areas across Logan's epic journey."
