AMD CEO Lisa Su to Visit Samsung for AI Memory Supply Talks
AMD CEO Lisa Su plans to meet Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Jun Young-hyun, who leads the company's core chip division, on Wednesday during her visit to South Korea, according to people familiar with the matter.
The meeting marks Su's second trip to Seoul in seven months. In March, AMD and Samsung reached a supply agreement covering next-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and advanced memory chips.
The talks come as a broad shortage of memory products pushes up prices, making memory one of the largest cost components for data center operators and limiting the expansion of AI infrastructure and services. Samsung and SK Hynix supply HBM for many of the world's high-end AI accelerators. South Korea plays a key role in the global tech ecosystem as both a major supplier and consumer of AI hardware.
South Korea is directing companies including Samsung and SK Hynix to invest a combined $880 billion in digital infrastructure and data centers for the AI era. Major telecom operators, manufacturers and internet platforms in the country are also increasing investment in AI data centers and next-generation enterprise services.
