Microsoft unveils Surface Laptop Ultra, a 'builder class PC' for AI developers

By AI123

At an event in San Francisco on October 8, Microsoft gave the first detailed look at its first "builder class PC," the Surface Laptop Ultra. The company describes it as "the most powerful thing we've ever made," positioning the machine specifically for developers and AI researchers rather than typical PC users.

The Surface Laptop Ultra features a 15-inch Mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio and peak brightness up to 2,000 nits. It includes a haptic touchpad that Microsoft says is 30 percent larger than those found on typical 15-inch Surface notebooks, along with USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, 3.5mm audio, and a full-size SD card reader. A new Magnetic Connect port combines magnetic charging with a traditional USB-C jack while still carrying power, video, and data.

Under the hood, the laptop is built around NVIDIA's RTX Spark chip, with options for an 18-core or 20-core CPU. It supports up to 128GB of unified memory and delivers up to one petaflop of FP4 AI compute. Microsoft says the Ultra has 2.5 times more thermal capacity than any previous Surface notebook and can deliver 99 percent of its maximum performance on battery power. Compared with a MacBook Pro featuring an M5 Pro chip, Microsoft claims the Ultra is 6.2 times faster at video generation, 4.3 times faster at image creation, and 2.1 times faster to first token.

The aluminum chassis measures 18mm thick and weighs 4.5 pounds, with user-removable storage. The Surface Laptop Ultra is available in platinum and nightfall colors, with pre-orders starting at $2,599. Microsoft also announced the Surface RTX Dev Box, available for pre-order at $5,999.
