Nvidia in Talks to Acquire or Invest in Open-Weight Model Developer Reflection AI

By AI123

Nvidia is in initial talks with Reflection AI, an open-weight model developer, about acquiring the company or increasing its investment, according to media reports. One option under discussion is an "acqui-hire" arrangement, in which Nvidia would hire Reflection's employees and obtain a license to its technology rather than completing a full acquisition, potentially avoiding regulatory scrutiny. Nvidia used a similar approach in December 2025 when it acquired semiconductor design company Groq.

If the acquisition does not materialize, Nvidia is also considering deepening its partnership through additional equity investment, expanded chip supply, and compute support. People familiar with the matter said a deal could be reached in the coming weeks, though the talks may still fall apart. Nvidia has previously invested $800 million in Reflection and is one of its largest investors.

Reflection AI was founded by two former Google DeepMind researchers and focuses on developing open-weight models. Earlier in October 2026, the company released its first open-weight model, Beam, which is designed for code generation and AI agent performance and runs on Nvidia chips. In April 2026, Reflection completed its latest funding round at a pre-money valuation of $25 billion. The company has also struck multi-billion-dollar deals with SpaceX and cloud provider Nebius to secure computing resources.

Analysts say a successful deal could strengthen Nvidia's vertical integration of chip and model development and affect the global AI market, though the transaction may face heightened regulatory attention given Reflection's strategic importance and valuation.
