Shing-Tung Yau Launches Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Alliance
On October 11, the inauguration ceremony of the Yau Shing-Tung Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Alliance was held at the Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University. The alliance was initiated by Shing-Tung Yau, chair professor at Tsinghua University and dean of Qiuzhen College, together with several mathematical research institutions, aiming to integrate national research forces in mathematics and AI and promote deep convergence of the two fields.
In his speech, Yau said that the rapid development of AI is bringing significant impact to mathematics and other basic disciplines, and that mathematicians cannot be absent from AI research. He emphasized that AI development should not rely solely on engineering technology, but also requires the participation of mathematicians with deep academic expertise to further improve machines' thinking and reasoning capabilities.
According to the introduction, the alliance will bring together more than a thousand researchers, focusing on research directions such as mathematics-specific large models and AI-assisted mathematical proof, promoting resource sharing and joint scientific research. Yau expressed hope that more mathematicians would join in the future to push forward AI development with the strength of mathematics.
