Chinese Scientists Use Homegrown Large Model to Prove Three-Dimensional Ghys Conjecture

By AI123

On October 15, Shanghai AI Laboratory announced that the three-dimensional Ghys conjecture, a world-class mathematical problem that had remained unsolved for more than 30 years, has been cracked. A team led by Xu Disheng, a visiting scholar at the laboratory and a professor at the University of Greater Bay Area, completed the proof using the ShuSheng-S2 scientific multimodal large model, following a “general-special fusion” technical path and human-machine collaboration.

The conjecture was proposed by French mathematician Étienne Ghys in 1995. Peking University professors Dong Bin and Liu Ruochuan used their SHEAF framework to formally verify the proof, confirming its correctness. This marks the first time Chinese scientists have used a Chinese large model to solve a world-class mathematical problem.

The paper has been posted on arXiv, and the formalization code is publicly available on GitHub. Shanghai AI Laboratory said the study validates a new research paradigm that integrates expert intuition into machine solving loops, a closed loop of “system exploration, expert judgment, result accumulation, and feedback correction.” The team plans to package the capability into reusable mathematical verification modules for its “ShuSheng-Duanyan” scientific discovery platform and extend the reasoning capabilities to other related disciplines.
