AstraZeneca, insitro in Up to $1.5B AI Drug Discovery Deal
On October 15, 2026, AstraZeneca announced a strategic drug discovery collaboration and license agreement with AI-based drug discovery company insitro. Under the deal, insitro will use its Virtual Human platform to identify causal disease biology in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and cardiomyopathy, and advance AstraZeneca-nominated targets to development candidate stage.
AstraZeneca will pay an upfront fee of $40 million, with milestone payments of up to approximately $1.46 billion, bringing the total potential value to about $1.5 billion, plus tiered royalties on global net sales.
insitro CEO Daphne Koller said most AI drug discovery companies focus on what happens after a target is identified, while insitro looks at earlier stages. The collaboration reflects a biology-model approach in AI drug development, exploring what drives disease before determining targets. It is another example of a major pharmaceutical company paying for the pre-target-discovery stage.
The deal was announced as three AI-driven drug discovery agreements closed within three days in mid-October 2026, together totaling about $4.645 billion.
